PETROZAVODSK. /Correspondent of ITAR-TASS Vladimir Zlobin/. The sculpture of the great Russian poet and the outstanding statesman Gavrila Derzhavin will be founded from bronze and placed in the center of Petrozavodsk by summer of the next year. This is the decision of the town-planning council of the capital of Karelia that has summed up competition on the best monument. The winner is the famous Karelian sculptor Valter Soini /architect Emil Kuldavletov/.
Derzhavin's name is inextricably related to the history of Petrozavodsk and all republic that before was referred to as Olonetsky region ruled by governor. In May of 1784 on the command of the empress Ekaterina the Second he was appointed the first governor of the lake-land and occupied this post for one and a half years. Under the certificate of historians Derzhavin has had time to make much for the city and the region during his governing. The first city hospital and the drugstore were constructed then. He struggled with abusings and bureaucratism of officials, mercilessly fined the bribe-takers.
"Monument to Derzhavin will be the best gift by the 300-th anniversary of Petrozavodsk that will be held at the end of June, 2003, - the main architect of the city Alexey Skripitsyn has told the correspondent of ITAR-TASS. - His full dressed figure will rise in full growth in the former Governor's garden on a pedestal of red granite."
