The Onego Regatta will keep taking starts

According to the uniform planned schedule of inter-regional, All-Russia and international sports activities of the Ministry for Sport, Tourism and Youth Policy of the Russian Federation and the planned schedule of official sports activities of the Republic of Karelia for the period from 2011 to 2013 The Onego Regatta will keep taking starts in the republic.

The Sailing Regatta Onego traces its history to 1972. As a tradition, The Onego Regatta is the main sports event in the Republic of Karelia. Now it is justly considered one of the most prestigious competitions among the yachtsmen and has a rank of the Cup of Russia. Over a period of 40 years annually about 50 yachts from regions of Russia, countries of the former Soviet Union and beyond take part in the regatta. The purpose of the regatta is involving population, especially, young people, in the sport activities and development of water kinds of sports and its popularization in the Republic of Karelia.

Head of the Republic of Karelia has ordered to establish a steering committee on preparation and conducting the regatta in the republic chaired by the Head of the Republic of Karelia Andrei Nelidov. Mikhail Senatorov, Vice-Chairman of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation and Chairman of the steering committee of The Bank Cup Regatta, and Alexander Voronov, Chairman of the State Committee of Karelia for Youth, Physical Training, Sports and Tourism, are appointed vice-presidents of the steering committee.
