A steering committee for preparation of the VIth annual international conference Cross-Border Cooperation: Russian Federation, European Union and Norway was established in Karelia

By the Dercee of the Head of the Republic of Karelia there has been established a steering committee for preparation of the VIth annual international conference Cross-Border Cooperation: Russian Federation, European Union and Norway to be held in June in Petrozavodsk. It was no coincidence in choosing the venue for the conference, as it is included in the number of activities ofcelebrating the 90th anniversary of Karelia's statehood.

Plenipotentiary of the President of the Russian Federation in Northwest Federal District Ilya Klebanov has headed the steering committee, Head of Karelia Sergey Katanandov was appointed his co-chairman. The committee includes two vice-presidents – the Assistant to the Plenipotentiary of the President of the Russian Federation in the NWFD Evgeny Lukianov and the First Assistant to the Prime Minister of the Government of the RK Alexander Kolesov. Also the committee comprises employees of the machinery of the Plenipotentiary of the President of the Russian Federation in the NWFD, heads of ministries and departments of the Government of Karelia and the government of St.-Petersburg, speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Karelia, employees of the Official Representation of the RK in St.-Petersburg, heads of Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Science and Petrozavodsk State University, management of St.-Petersburg organizations engaged in exhibition and congress activity.

On February 5 under the presidency of Evgeny Lukianov who has come from St.-Petersburg there has been held the first working session of the steering committee. In the opening address the guest from St.-Petersburg has once again emphasized importance of development of cross-border cooperation, which primary goal he has defined as granting Russian business an opportunity to work in the neighbouring states.

Evgeny Lukianov has told precisely about the choice of the venue of the Conference. As he said, Petrozavodsk is not only the capital of the republic celebrating the 90th anniversary of the statehood, but also a city with high level of development of IT-technologies, the center of the only region in the Northwest of Russia where there is an approved professional tourist concept where numerous bilateral projects with the neighbouring Finland have been implemented since long ago.

During the session members of the steering committeehave discussed specific proposals on the program and the venue of the Conference, volume of financing, category and number of participants, subjects of expositions dated for the Conference; they have considered the offered variants of logotype, have approved the membership and the head of the advisory council. Now the advisory council should complete all the submitted projects and offers and present its conclusions and recommendations to members of the steering committee by February 17.

The next session of the steering committee will be held, presumably, also in Petrozavodsk in the second decade of March.

Let us remind, that history of the annual international conference devoted to frontier cooperation between the Russian Federation, the European union and Norway has begun in 2005. Before the conferences were held in St.-Petersburg, Petrozavodsk, Kaliningrad, and Pskov. Annually the conference welcomed more than 200 participants including representatives of local and regional administrations, bodies of the federal authority, business circles and scientific community, international and noncommercial organizations of the Baltic countries and the Barents regions.
