The VIth Congress of Miners of Karelia gathers together representatives of the branch from all over the republic

The VIth Congress of Miners of the Republic of Karelia took place on December, 4 in Petrozavodsk. The main topic on the agenda was discussion of guidelines for the mining industry development in the republic and current problems faced by the branch.

Opening of international specialized exhibitions Karelian Stone 2014 and Roads of Karelia 2014 preceded opening of the Congress.

Over a period of years the mining industry was one of the most advanced and surging spheres in the economy of Karelia. The mineral resources base of the republic has ample opportunities: reserves of iron ore, porphyrite, schungite are developed, aggregates and peat are extracted. The industry has 87 enterprises with almost 10,000 employees. Since 2000 the share of mining enterprises in total volume of industrial production in Karelia has grown from 15 to 40 percent.

Implementation of more that 40 investment projects of ragstone extraction for manufacturing of roadmeatl and stone blocks, extraction of sand and peat is currently in progress in Karelia. More than 400 new jobs have been created in the past two years.

– The Government of the republic in its work has always proceeded from the fact that mining industry is one of the most important and challenging branches. We'll support mining industry with all our administrative and political leverages, the more so that the Congress is held in the context of complex economical situation that has developed in the country as a whole, and, respectively, in our republic, – Oleg Gromov has told.

Chairman of the Association of Miners of Karelia Vladimir Aminov, Director of Loskoye-5 Ltd. Viktor Kretov, Director of KP-Gabbro Ltd. Vasily Kalmykov and Director of Prirodresurs Ltd. Igor Rozhansky spoke at the Congress about prospects of development of the branch and and about problems faced by mining enterprises.

According to Vladimir Aminov, further development of the branch is related to opening of iron deposits.

– The Government of Karelia is promoting implementation of the Pudozh mega-project. At last, this idea has taken feasible forms, options of Exploitation of Mineral Resources of Pudozh region as an integrated regional complex where production of building materials is a powerhouse for development of other manufactures have been explored. As a result we have a serious project which we may call today a mega-project, – Vladimir Aminov has told.

Chairman of the Association of Miners of Karelia has suggested to solve the issue of establishing the priority development area for implementation of the Pudozh mega-project. The more so that the President of Russia in his Annual Address to the Federal Assembly has especially pointed out the necessity to adopt the law on priority development areas as soon as possible.

Among the problems restraining development of the mining industry, especially extraction of stone blocks and production of roadmetal, the speakers have mentioned the problem of 'double lease' of forest land, work in designated forest, peculiarities of tax assessment at extraction of building materials, transportation cost increase at shipping to the Central Federal District .

On December, 5 the round-table discussion of main spheres of the mining industry development in Karelia will take place within the scope of the Congress in the Ministry of Nature Management and Ecology where its participants will discuss in detail all suggestions made by heads of enterprises at the Congress and will adopt a resolution.
