Participants of volunteer action in Sortavala took away dozens of sacks with garbage - with mostly rusty cans and empty bottles from the Ladoga rocky islets.
The garbage that had been accumulated on the islets of the biggest in Europe and undoubtedly the most beautiful lake for dozens of years, was collected, put in sacks
and loaded on motor boats, after that everything was taken to Sortavala and there all garbage went to the city refuse dump. 12 tons - 6 containers. So much garbage
was never collected before - that's the general opinion of all event's organizers.
Such large-scaled events were already arranged in Rostov-on-Don, Sochi, Krymsk, Taman. Such a large-scaled event was organized in Sortavala for the first time,
supported by the city administration and the Government of the Republic of Karelia, though voluntary events on people's days off for cleaning embankment from
garbage are regularly held by local authorities. Karelvodokanal LLC and Evraziysky OJSC initiated this event. The latter is a big company engaged in municipal
services, in water supply and water drainage.
Sergey Kvasnitsky, Director General of Karelvodokanal, said that the islets would be cleaned every year from now on. He mentioned that there was less garbage in recent years.
Tourists are everywhere. On Saturday there are tents on all islets. Olga Baranova, inspector of the State Small Vessel Inspectorate, says that there is more order now and
she also expressed an opinion that tourists became more civilized. In most cases garbage is old, now, as a rule, people take their garbage with them after recreation.
Igor Shirshov, Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of Karelia, came to Sortavala to support the event. He took his son with him as an assistant. On the whole there
were a lot of children. "That's how we should teach to love our small Motherland," someone of the voluntary event participants said.
On the whole about 300 people took part in the event: 20 motor boats ran over the lake from islets to ships that took the garbage away.
