Today, Artur Parfenchikov, the Head of the Republic, and Tarvo Nieminen, Consul, Head of the
Petrozavodsk branch of the Consulate General of Finland in St. Petersburg, discussed the issues of development of new areas of cooperation between Karelia and Finland.
First, the issue of the development of joint Russian-Finnish entrepreneurship on the territory of the Republic for various types of economic activity was discussed.
emphasized that Karelia is ready to provide all necessary assistance in this direction.
"We hope that Finnish businesses would be interested in the opening potential of new productions in the territories of outpacing social and economic development created
in Karelia within
the single-industry towns," the Head of the Republic noted.
The Head of the region also said that the opportunity for participation of Finnish business representatives in the work of the Coordinating Council for Foreign Investments,
created under the Head of Karelia, has been worked out. At the next meeting, a new working group will be formed to raise foreign investment for the region's economy.
The first meeting of the Coordination Council is proposed to be held in the Sortavala region with a visit to the Karelian-Finnish enterprises.
The parties also discussed new areas of cooperation in the field of tourism and culture, the possibility of carrying out flights between Petrozavodsk and Helsinki,
the development of a project with Finnish partners on the use of Karelian territories' potential of the Arctic zone - Belomorsk, Louhi and Kem.
"We have many areas of common interest needed to give a new impetus to our cooperation. There is all the potential for this, given the historical and cultural
connections between Karelia and Finland," the Head of Karelia said.
Tarvo Nieminen, the Head of the Petrozavodsk branch of the Consulate General of Finland in St. Petersburg, expressed great interest in Karelia and his willingness
to support new initiatives aimed at developing bilateral relationship.
Speaking broadly about cooperation with Finland, Artur Parfenchikov emphasized that the European neighbor is traditionally an important partner of the Republic.
The cooperation between the republics is actively developing in many areas, including activities as part of the Euroregion "Karelia." The next meeting of the
Euroregion Executive Committee will be held in Petrozavodsk on November 2. At the same time, the international seminar "Russia and Finland: the experience and
opportunities of cross-border cooperation" will be held, with the discussion of the results and prospects of the Karelian-Finnish relations.
