Under the Russian Government's Executive Order No 2809-r of December 14, 2017, the Head of the Republic of Karelia Artur Parfenchikov
has been appointed a member of the Government Committee of the Russian Federation on Fishery Development.
Karelia's fishery industry includes over 200 various business entities, most of which are involved in open sea and ocean fishing,
inland water fishing, inland fish farming, fish processing and production of fishery products.
Recent years have witnessed a steady increase in fish farming and production. The Republic of Karelia is considered one of the most
favorable regions for freshwater trout farming on a commercial scale in the Russian Federation. By 2016, the commercial fisheries
output increased twofold, when compared to 2010.
"Aquaculture industry development is the top priority for the development of Karelia's agricultural sector in general. Our region
takes a leading position in this field and has the capacity for increasing its aquaculture output. Becoming a member of the Government
Committee on Fishery Development is a very important step, because it will help us develop the market for fish and other aquatic products,
effectively allocate government resources, and collaborate in solving key issues for the sake of the industry's development," Artur Parfenchikov said.
