The Day of the Republic of Karelia is the event that symbolizes the process of formation of Karelia’s statehood.
The beginning of Statehood dates back to the 8th of June, 1920. By the Decree of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee, a decision was made to form the Karelian Labor Commune, the first national and state formation on the territory of the modern Republic of Karelia. The decree read: "To form a regional association, the Karelian Labor Commune in the areas inhabited by the Karelians in the Olonets and Arkhangelsk provinces in accordance with Article 11 of the Constitution of the RSFSR."
All previous formations on the land, created within the framework of the Russian centralized state, had at best an administrative-territorial nature. For example, the Olonets province...
After June 8, 1920, the national and state formation, which name indicates that it is inhabited by the Karelians, was subjected to changes several times, but at the same time, it has never lost its national and state status.
By the decree of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee and the Council of the People's Commissars of June 25, 1923, the Autonomous Karelian Soviet Socialist Republic was created. It became the successor of the KLK and then, on March 31, 1940, was transformed into the union Karelian and Finnish Soviet Socialist Republic with the inclusion of the territory that had ceded from Finland to the USSR on the basis of the peace treaty between the USSR and Finland of March 12, 1940. Based on the Law of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of July 16, 1956, it was transformed into the Karelian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. The adoption of the first and the subsequent Constitutions of Karelia were natural stages on the way of the statehood development. The events of the same series include the adoption of the Resolution of the Supreme Soviet of the Karelian ASSR of August 9, 1990, the Declaration on the State Sovereignty of the Karelian ASSR, which preserved the relations of Karelia with Russia as a subject of the Federation.
At the tenth session of the Supreme Soviet of the Karelian ASSR of the twelfth convocation on November 13, 1991, a decision was made to change the name of the republic. The Karelian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was transformed into the Republic of Karelia.
With the adoption of the current Constitution of the Republic of Karelia, the symbols of its statehood such as the flag, the coat of arms, the anthem and the capital were established.
On April 22, 1999, the Chamber of the Republic of the Legislative Assembly of the Republic of Karelia adopted the Law of the Republic of Karelia N 346 "On establishment of the Day of the Republic of Karelia". According to the Law, June 8, the day of signing the resolution of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee "On formation of the Karelian Labor Commune" in 1920, is declared the Day of the Republic of Karelia.
