Icebreaker ship construction began for the first time in Karelia
The icebreaker keel lay down took place on May 12 at the Onega Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Plant. The ship is being built by order of the FGUP "Rosmorport".
For Karelia, it is a historical event. It’s the first icebreaker of such class which is being built at the Karelian plant.
The shallow-draft icebreaker of the project 22740 M is designed for operation in the Baltic, White, Azov and Caspian Seas, on inland waterways, as well as in other sea basins. The ship will be used for icebreaking support for winter navigation, vessels convoy piloting in ice conditions, towing of ships and other floating structures in ice conditions and in open water, and for solving other issues in servicing port waters and infrastructure.
At the grand ceremony, the right to attach the fitting board was granted to the honorary guests: the Deputy Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Mikhail Popov, the member of the Board of the Military-Industrial Commission of the Russian Federation Vladimir Pospelov, the Deputy General Director for the fleet of FGUP “Rosmorport” Vasily Strugov and the Director of the Onega Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Plant Vladimir Maizus.
- This is a completely new competence for the enterprise. But even today, at the stage of construction, there is full confidence that with the support of the Government of the region, it will be professionally and quickly mastered, the order will be completed on time. The shipyard is of great importance for the development of the economic potential of the Republic of Karelia. In recent years, the production volumes have increased, the workers’ wages have grown, and the payments to the budget are being raised. Everything became possible thanks to the help of the federal structures, the competent management of the plant and its workforce, - said Dmitry Rodionov, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of Karelia for Economic Affairs.
Dmitry Rodionov also added that this is the first of two icebreakers, which construction is scheduled to start this year on the order of Rosmorport. The order for the construction of the icebreakers of the project 22740 was transferred from the Far Eastern shipyard “Zvezda” to the Onega shipbuilding shipyard.
The main scantling numerals of the vessel are the length - 81.4 m, the width - 17.0 m, the draft of vessel - 3.2 m, the cruising capacity - at least 10 days in terms of fuel reserves and 5 days in terms of fresh water reserves, the ice rate - KM Icebreaker6. Such icebreakers can be operated at water temperatures from minus two to plus thirty degrees and air temperatures from minus 40 to plus 34 degrees Celsius.
- Since 2015, we have been building industrial vessels for Rosmorport. And today, I have no doubts that next year, after the modernization program completion, we will build new types of vessels that haven’t been built by the enterprise before. These are bunkering tankers for transportation of liquefied natural gas, fishing vessels, cargo ships and tankers, - said the director of the Onega Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Plant Vladimir Maizus.
During the ceremony, the company professionals were awarded the Badge of Honor of the Head of the Republic of Karelia. They were the electricians Alexander Fedorov and Maxim Sivyakov, the head of the engineering department Anton Kuznetsov and the boiler facility operator Vladimir Nekrasov. Also, the plant workers were awarded with the Certificate of Appreciation of the Government of Karelia.
