Karelia and Türkiye agreed to increase cooperation
As part of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, on June 15, 2023, the Head of the Republic of Karelia Artur Parfenchikov met with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Türkiye to the Russian Federation Mehmet Samsar.
During the meeting, Artur Parfenchikov noted the two-fold increase in trade between Karelia and Türkiye in 2022, and also highlighted a number of current and promising projects of bilateral cooperation:
- Since September 2022, the Government of the Republic of Karelia has been developing cooperation with the Turkish holding Gorev. The issues of supply of lumber, wood fuel pellets, as well as the products of the Karelian company EFER, which produces fire robots, are being worked out. Also, together with the colleagues, we are working on the possibility of implementing a project to organize direct deliveries of the Karelian goods to Türkiye by creating a company that would deal with these issues.
Mehmet Samsar, in his turn, noted the tourism potential of Karelia, expressed his readiness to assist in organizing a business mission of the region to Türkiye, and also proposed the idea of holding cross days of culture in Karelia and Türkiye.
At the end of the meeting, the Ambassador accepted the invitation of the Head of the Republic of Karelia to visit the region, to see the beauty of the Karelian nature with his own eyes and to discuss in detail possible areas of cooperation development.
