Marble mining resumes in Karelia after 20 years

The development of the deposit will begin on the border of the Pryazhinsky district and the Pitkyaranta district. The Head of Karelia Artur Parfenchikov visited the new stone processing shop in Pitkyaranta.

Marble mining at the deposit “Kovadjarvi” in the Pryazhinsky district is planned to begin this spring. Development will be carried out by the AO “Prionezhskaya Gornaya Kompania”. The last place of marble mining in the republic was the Ruskeala Canyon. Its development was completed more than 20 years ago. The head of Karelia Artur Parfenchikov visited the new production site of the future stone processing plant in Pitkyaranta and met with the general director of the enterprise Semyon Sychev.

– The revival of marble mining is a major event for Karelia and the entire North-West. We have already been presented with a rich palette of stone, and some of the materials can be used to restore objects that were built from Ruskeala marble, – said Artur Parfenchikov. – In addition to the existing workshop, where marble will be polished and packaged, they plan to build a stone processing plant here with an area of 2 thousand square meters and modern equipment.

The head of Karelia instructed the relevant departments to provide the necessary support to the enterprise to expand the land plot for the construction of the workshops for deep marble processing. They plan to start their own sawing and manufacturing of finished products in the Pitkyaranta district by 2027. The government of the republic will also help bring the necessary electricity and gas supply capacities to the territory.

- We have acquired the territory of the former service center for logging equipment in Pitkyaranta. Here we plan to build the largest stone processing factory in Karelia and produce from 10 to 15 thousand square meters of sawn stone per month, - shared Semyon Sychev. - In April, we will start mining operations. We will extract marble of 8 colors, including decorative landscape varieties. It is almost identical in its properties and palette to Ruskeala marble.
