Artur Parfenchikov: “Karelian baptism was of great importance for the history of our region”
The first meeting of the organizing committee for preparing and holding the celebration of the 800th anniversary of baptism of the Karelians took place in Moscow. The head of the republic reported on how Karelia is preparing for this important event.
On November 20, the first meeting of the organizing committee for preparation and holding of the celebration of the 800th anniversary of baptism of the Karelians was held at the House of Government of the Russian Federation. The celebration will take place in 2027 by the decree of the Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, the Chairman of the Organizing Committee Dmitry Chernyshenko noted the importance of holding the anniversary nationwide.
- In 2027, Russia will celebrate the 800th anniversary of baptism of the Karelians. This is an important event in the history of our country. Thanks to it, Karelia became a part of the Russian world, Russian civilization. When preparing for the celebration, it is necessary to clearly prioritize all activities and build effective interdepartmental work,” said Dmitry Chernyshenko.
The main events dedicated to the celebration will take place in Karelia. The head of the region, Artur Parfenchikov, reported on the preparations. According to him, special attention will be paid to the brand projects that form the informational, ideological and popularization component of the 800th anniversary of baptism of the Karelians.
As part of the celebration of baptism of the Karelians, new spiritual and educational centers will appear in the republic, the cultural heritage sites associated with the spread of Orthodoxy in Karelia will be restored, a number of publishing projects will be implemented, as well as educational events will be held.

The significance of the celebration of the 800th anniversary of baptism of the Karelians was emphasized by the Metropolitan of Petrozavodsk and Karelia Konstantin. According to him, it is important for strengthening the role of Orthodoxy in the modern geopolitical situation. The Metropolitan dwelt in detail on the issue of building spiritual and educational centers in the territory of the republic and the Petrozavodsk diocese.
The meeting participants expressed full support for implementation of the events within the framework of the celebration of the 800th anniversary of baptism of the Karelians.
