The eighth model library in Karelia opened in the settlement of Helyulya

Owing to the national project “Culture”, the Helyul Library has turned into a modern space where it is comfortable to study, communicate and develop creatively. “Library is a meeting place for generations”. With this motto, the library begins its work in a new status.

The Helyulya city library is already the third model library in the Sortavala region. Previously, modern centers for reading and communication were opened on the basis of the libraries of Sortavala and the settlement of Vyartsilya.

The Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of the Republic of Karelia for Social Affairs Larisa Podsadnik highly appreciated the conditions created for reading and creativity:

- Today, it is a space for reading as well as a space for communicating, spending time, meeting wonderful people. We continue the national project “Culture” on the territory of the Republic of Karelia. We will open more and more libraries, because they love books, respect books, cherish books and read books in the Republic of Karelia!

The Helyulya Library is located in the very center of the settlement. Every year it is visited by about 11 thousand readers of different ages. A great amount of diverse events are held here: exhibitions, book presentations, master classes, game programs. The educational institutions and public organizations of the settlement actively cooperate with the library. Artistic groups often perform here, literary and musical lounges and creative evenings are held here, too. Particular attention is paid to the local history. The library has a rich collection of documents and exhibits on the history of the settlement, its enterprises, famous residents, etc.

The new status allowed the library to make serving its readers comfortable and modern. Thanks to the national project, the library has turned into a modern intellectual, developmental, cultural, educational, creative platform, and a center of public life for the local population.

Using the received federal funds, the Helyulya Library was redecorated, new furniture was purchased, modern computer and multimedia equipment was purchased, the book collection was updated, the library processes were automated, and the access to the electronic and digital resources of the National Electronic Library was gained.

The proper zoning of the library space will make it possible to meet the needs of different groups of the population, including handicapped people, since all functional areas are located on the ground floor, where you can freely move from one room to another. There is also a comfortable space for children and teenagers to spend their leisure time, with special areas for private reading and co-working. The immediate plans include organizing new interest groups and clubs on the basis of the library. It will make it possible to attract the interest of the youth and young families, thereby reducing the outflow of this population group from the settlement.

It should be reminded that the library in the settlement of Helyulya became the eighth model library in Karelia, which was among the winners of the competitive selection of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. Since 2019, model libraries have been operating in the villages of Yanishpole and Muezersky, Kalevala, Vyartsilya, the village of Kotkozero, the cities of Sortavala and Kondopoga. By the end of 2023, there will be nine such modern spaces in the republic. The library in Belomorsk will receive a model status in early October.
